Overview
Designing for a dry climate
Located on a hillside in Agia Kali in Skiathos, overlooking the Aegean Sea, this project involves the development of two villas nestled within a Mediterranean landscape. The design aims to restore and integrate the built environment with its natural surroundings, respecting the existing landscape and vegetation.
Mature olive trees, characteristic of the local landscape, are preserved and incorporated into the final composition, reinforcing a strong sense of place and continuity with the land.

The planting design process
Prioritising the ecological value
The planting design process focused on the ecological sensitivity and visual harmony with the surrounding environment. Plant selection prioritised drought-tolerant, low-maintenance Mediterranean species suited to the sloped landscape, minimising irrigation needs and long-term after care.
Native and naturalised plants such as aromatic herbs, groundcovers, and shrubs were strategically used to stabilise soil, reduce erosion, and blend new interventions seamlessly with the existing landscape.
Special care was taken to reintroduce salvaged olive trees post-construction, anchoring the landscape in its original character.

Outcome
Landscape resilience
The resulting landscape design supports a sustainable and resilient environment that complements the villas without competing with the panoramic sea views. Reinstating the olive groves and integrating carefully selected plant communities has created a cohesive and tranquil atmosphere, enhancing both ecological function and aesthetic experience.
The project demonstrates a sensitive and site-specific approach to Mediterranean landscape restoration, offering a long-term vision of beauty, simplicity, and stewardship.
