Who We Are

I’m Lily Bakratsa, a landscape architect, educator and horticulturist with a background in architecture and a passion for helping people develop a deeper understanding of landscape and nature.

My multidisciplinary experience allows me to look at landscapes holistically — considering ecology, planting, design, function and, most importantly, the relationship between people and the places they inhabit. Over the past decade, I have worked across private gardens, public spaces and landscape masterplans in the UK and Greece, collaborating with private clients, architects, communities and multidisciplinary teams within landscape architecture practices and the wider design industry.

Education has always been an important part of my practice. Alongside my professional work, I have worked as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Sheffield, supporting teaching Ecological Design alongside Nigel Dunnett and Landscape, Design & Art alongside Cathy Dee. Since 2018, I have also been teaching Garden Design at Capel Manor College in Regent’s Park, London, where I support students from absolute beginners to aspiring designers as they develop their creative, technical and practical skills.

My professional experience also includes public consultation, community engagement and collaborative projects, working with people to understand their needs, ideas and relationships with the places around them. Through landscape architecture practices in London and Greece, I have contributed to projects where consultation and collaboration are an important part of the design process. These experiences have shaped my belief that good landscapes are not simply designed for people, but developed with them.

Through It’s All Green to Me, I extend this approach beyond the traditional classroom, creating accessible courses, workshops and learning opportunities for anyone who wants to understand how to design with nature — whether they are homeowners, creatives, architects, designers or simply curious about landscapes.

My work also explores the role of landscape in wider social and cultural contexts. I have a particular interest in research and publications that examine the relationships between people, nature, wellbeing, memory and grief, including cemeteries, reflection parks and other spaces of contemplation. I am interested in how landscape can respond to social change and create places that support connection, biodiversity and collective experience.

Alongside teaching and research, I develop participatory projects and workshops that bring people together to imagine, design and create nature-based spaces. I also work across writing, illustration and creative projects, collaborating with artists, writers, cultural organisations and communities to communicate landscape ideas in engaging and accessible ways.

My professional work has been recognised through awards and roles including winning the RHS Green Plan It competition and serving as a Landscape Ambassador and member of the Landscape Institute’s Editorial Board. These experiences continue to shape It’s All Green to Me: an initiative for learning, research, creativity and participation, with the belief that everyone can learn to see, understand and design with nature.
