A shady garden can often feel neglected or difficult to design. Typical challenges include patchy planting, bare or compacted soil, and poor drainage. I bumped into a border in full shade the other day and was sad to see that it was only covered in ivy with a couple of ferns. A missed opportunity to create a lush woodland effect in the heart of a city.
