Overview
Designing a ‘naturalistic’ garden
The clients of this private residential scheme had recently renovated their house and wanted to transform the existing garden into a more ‘naturalistic’ outdoor space. As a busy family of four with a strong appreciation for nature, they wanted a garden that would provide opportunities for relaxation, play and spending time outdoors, while requiring relatively little day-to-day maintenance.
The existing building provides an important connection to the garden and offers an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between indoor and outdoor living. Our proposal seeks to open the building towards the new naturalistic garden, creating a more direct visual and physical connection with the landscape.
Larger openings and improved access to the garden will allow natural light, views and planting to become part of the interior experience. The transition between building and garden will be softened through natural materials, generous planting and a carefully considered threshold, creating a sense that the garden extends naturally into the living spaces.
