Impatiens: Impatient in latin. Possibly because it is eager to bloom! It starts flowering in early April, and continues through the summer and autumn until the first frost! It’s so busy flowering that we also call it ‘Busy Lizie’.
Impatiens walleriana is one of my favourite groundcover plants for shady spots. Indeed, there are not many plants out there that can offer long seasons of colour throughout the year but that is one! Here is how I would use it in planting design:
1. As a colour ‘provider’
It provides a continuous splash of colour throughout the growing season, enlivening a shady spot that might otherwise appear dull.
2. As a shade-lover
Ideal for underplanting below trees, along shady pathways, or in north-facing gardens where sunlight is limited.
3. As a ground cover to soften the edges
A very effective ground cover, good for suppressing weeds and for providing a neat, finished look to your garden beds. It is perfect for defining the edges of garden beds, pathways, and patios.
4. To frame a feature in the garden
Use it to frame garden features like statues or near water fountains, or benches. A lovely plant for a ceramic pot!
5. To use in containers and hanging baskets
Excellent in containers and hanging baskets, it will bring colour to your patios, balconies, and other hardscape areas.
6. To create either a tropical-style or woodland style garden
Its lush foliage and vibrant colors makes it suitable for tropical-themed gardens, where it can complement other bold, exotic plants. Alternatively, it’s great for a woodland-style garden, planted in a shady spot among Hostas and ferns. In the photograph above it is planted below an Ilex tree in the mountains of central Greece.
