Community members bringing the design to life
Ambition
Bringing a community together
We were asked to create distinctive, welcoming signage that strengthens the identity of St. Luke’s Community Garden while engaging local participants in the design and making process. The project aimed to build a sense of ownership and pride by transforming practical signage into a collaborative expression of the community and its garden.

Bringing skills, experiences and ideas together
Our approach
From shared ideas to handmade signs
We followed a step by step process, organising a series of workshops, including different ages and skills.
1. Introducing the project: The first workshop brought participants together to introduce the project, explore ideas and agree on the overall approach to the signage.
2. Developing the visual language: Together, we explored and selected colours, materials and graphic elements that reflected the character of the community garden.
3. Preparing the timber : Participants worked together to prepare, paint and finish the wooden boards, building the signs layer by layer.
4. Creating the stencils: Designs were transferred onto the painted timber using handmade stencils, with participants working across different stages of the process.
5. Collaborative making: Participants of different ages and backgrounds joined throughout the day, contributing their skills and ideas and working collaboratively to bring the signage to life.
